Our fourth cohort was fortunate to begin the year with a guest lecture from Professor Yehuda Bauer. Professor Bauer is considered to be one of the founders of Holocaust Studies, has published many books, and has been a leader in the field for decades. In 1998 he received the Israel Prize, regarded as the state’s highest honor, for history of the Jewish People.
Professor Bauer spoke to our students about common misunderstandings about the Holocaust.
“I find again and again people believing that the Holocaust was pre-planned, that Hitler or some people around him planned the Holocaust before it happened. This is totally wrong.” (1:00)
“Could the Jews of Europe have been saved? Well the question is by whom.” (39:00)
“The accusation against the British is that by opening the gates of Palestine they could have rescued huge numbers of Jews from the Balkans at least.” (55:20)
We invite you to watch the recording of the lecture below to find out what he had to say about these three issues. At the end of the video there is a question and answer response with our students in which Professor Bauer fields their challenging questions.
